Blog #6 – Coverage of COVID-19
In my opinion, I believe the coverage of the pandemic should be free to the public, because it is a unique circumstance in which the general public needs to be informed to not only stay safe, but prevent this issue from getting worse, and if the coverage is free, then there is no excuse.
I also believe that any news that is related to COVID-19 should be considered news related to the pandemic whether it is local news or international. This is a time of economic crisis for both news producers and news consumers. I include the economic side as news related to the pandemic because that affects the overall public and is halting the American and International economy. One way news organizations could separate general health news related to the pandemic and business news related to the pandemic, would be to do registration through certain companies.
If news organizations began to up-charge for news relating to the world wide pandemic, they would receive an unbelievable amount of bad press, and receive terrible backlash when the pandemic is eventually over. Assuming we are referring to the large news organizations, this would not be a good move at all, but if we are talking to local news, people may be more willing to pay to help stimulate local economy.
